Settlement of Ingólfur Arnarson and Hallveig Hróðmarsdóttir in AD874, Reykjavík became capital 1786. World’s oldest Parliament was established AD930 at Thingvellir. Christianity adopted year one thousand. Cathedral built at Skálholt in the eleventh century. Althing built 1882 by Austurvöllur. Dómkirkjan; Iceland’s first cathedral had been opened 1796. The nation won home-rule 1904, sovereignty 1918 and independence 1944 when World War II was waged in the North-Atlantic. Iceland was modernized. The fishing industry thrived, and the Nation won its fishing grounds during the Cod Wars 1952-1976. Cathedral of pastor Hallgrímur Pétursson at Skólavörðustíg and Basilica of Christ at Landakot; the only Basilica in the Nordic Countries. Number of magnificent art museums are visited in Reykjavík and rural Iceland; Westland, Westfjords, North, East and South Iceland and Reykjanes. Then up to the Highlands to the Grand Vatnajökull where Torfajökull is hidden behind the mountains. Oh, how grim is the story of rural Icelanders serenely living by forces of nature.
