Africa to Arizona - Memories of a South African Scatterling
by Louis van Tonder / Edited by M.T. New
In "Africa to Arizona- Memories of a South African Scatterling "Tihêhô takes readers on a captivating journey through his life, spanning continents and cultures. Born and raised on the picturesque farm of Wintershoek in South Africa, his childhood is filled with adventures, close encounters with wildlife, and the unique experiences of rural life. From racing pigeons and winning prestigious competitions to his emotional connections with family and friends, Tihêhô's early years are rich with memories that shaped his identity. His years in the military also left scars on him – both psychological as well as physical.
As he transitions from the idyllic farm life to the complexities of adulthood, Tihêhô’s careers covered working as a professional hunting guide for a number of years, but the unethical practices of the industry left him disgusted with the industry, although he still faced the anomaly of having to continue with the career because of practical issues of the day when he faces the challenges of moving to America. The narrative delves into the cultural shock, the strains of adaptation, and the devastating experiences of divorce and separation from his children. Yet, through these trials, Louis discovers resilience and strength, finding new beginnings with his beloved wife, Terri.
Together, they build a fulfilling life on a ranch in Arizona, surrounded by friends and enriched by their business, African Safaris and Travel. (https://www.africansafaris.travel) Their adventures abroad and the enchanting beauty of African wildlife become a significant part of their story. Through surgeries, pain, and uncertainty, Tihêhô learns profound life lessons, and the couple's love and laughter endure as a testament to their unwavering bond.
"From Africa to Arizona" masterfully weaves together the nostalgia of Tihêhô's (Louis van Tonder’s) African roots with the American dream, underscoring the significance of family, heritage, and the indomitable human spirit. This memoir is more than a recount of events; it’s a celebration of life's trials and triumphs, reminding readers to live each moment fully. It evokes a sense of hiraeth, a Welsh term that captures a spiritual longing for a home that perhaps never was. The book paints Tihêhô as a "Scatterling, yearning for ancient places to which he cannot return, the echo of lost realms of a soul’s past, resonating in the wind, the rocks, the waves—it is nowhere and it is everywhere.
