I have finally settled in to create a comprehensive update to The LEP Study Guide for the Licensed Educational Psychology Exam (LEP), this second, (2025) edition has a strong emphasis on the most current laws, assessment materials, terminology updates, and UDL educational strategies.
Overview: The Do’s and Don’ts for a practicing Licensed Educational Psychologist
A licensed educational psychologist (LEP) can diagnose (unlike a school psychologist) certain psychological disorders, especially those that impact academic learning and behavior in the educational setting. LEP’s are trained to conduct psychoeducational assessments, which can identify learning disabilities, ADHD, and other conditions. Their scope of practices may vary by state, but they are generally authorized to diagnose and provide services related to academic difficulties.
The practice in a nutshell:
Diagnosis: LEPs are authorized to diagnose psychological disorders that relate to academic learning processes.
Assessment: LEPs conduct comprehensive assessments to identify the specific needs of students, including learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety, and other behavioral issues.
Intervention: Based on their assessments, LEPs develop treatment plans and strategies to address the identified needs of students.
Counseling: LEPs provide counseling services for students, parents, and families to address social, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
Collaboration: We collaborate with educators, parents, other educational partners, and professionals to support student success.
LEP Ethical Do’s and Don’ts rollcall:
Do - Keep records for at least 6 years.
Do - Advertise as an Educational Psychologist or Licensed Educational Psychologist
Don’t – Advertise as a Licensed Psychologist
Do – Adhere to HIPPA and FERPA
Do – Follow CASP and NASP codes of Ethics
Do – Review DSM for related diagnoses
Don’t – provide psychotherapy for marital discord, substance abuse, or non-educational issues
Do – what you love and enjoy the ride.
